GMC has announced that the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali pickup will be offering GM’s advanced Super Cruise in the 2022 model year. Here’s a look at what this technology is expected to offer, how it works, and other GM models that are lined up to receive it.
About GM Super Cruise Technology
GM’s Super Cruise technology is considered one of the safest and most helpful driver assistance technologies out there. In a test conducted by Consumer Reports, GM’s Super Cruise ranked number one against 17 other competitors with a score of 69 out of 100. This technology is expected to be available on the Sierra 1500’s top trim level, the Sierra 1500 Denali.
As if receiving GM’s advanced Super Cruise technology isn’t exciting enough, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali will be the first vehicle to introduce a new feature of the Super Cruise that lets drivers travel hands-free while also towing a trailer. In addition to the hands-free towing feature, Super Cruise also lets drivers activate an automated lane change using the turn-signal stalk. Super Cruise and its advanced features can be used on over 200,000 miles of roads in the United States and Canada.
How Does GM Super Cruise Work?
The advanced Super Cruise driver-assistance technology works in unison with adaptive cruise control to allow drivers to operate their vehicles hands-free. While this technology does allow for hands-free driving, the driver must continue to pay attention to the road at all times and must use the technology only under the proper conditions.
Super Cruise uses multiple technologies, including a driver attention system, precision LiDAR map data, GPS, cameras, and sensors. The driver attention system is used to make sure the driver is paying attention to the road at all times. It uses a small camera on the steering column with infrared lights to track the driver’s eyes and determine where he or she is looking while using Super Cruise.
If the system tracks that the driver has turned his or her eyes away from the road for too long, it will use the steering wheel light bar to bring the driver’s attention back to the road. This particular tracking feature is part of what places Super Cruise at the top of its competition, as many technologies similar to Super Cruise only monitor the location of the driver’s hands.
Other GM Models With Super Cruise
Super Cruise is already being offered on other GM models, such as the 2020 Cadillac CT6, but the coming years will be big as non-luxury models become equipped with this industry-changing technology. In addition to the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali, GM plans to introduce Super Cruise to multiple other GM vehicles in the 2022 model year, including the Chevy Bolt EV, the Chevy Bolt EUV, and the GMC Hummer EV.
